Looking at a newborn baby I see such fragility, such complete dependance. The world they are born into is a hostile place without the protection of determined and constant care. In the presence of love each child grows and thrives.
You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
~ Psalm 139:5-6
Several years ago I began to make blankets for the newborn babies of friends. With each stitch there is a prayer breathed for the child that this blanket will cover and comfort – Father, cover this child in your love. Hem them in behind and before. Be their comfort all the days of their lives.
This past week I was able to deliver this blanket in person to the very newborn daughter of one of my best friends. My flight had been booked for months already so there was no way I could plan to drive straight from the airport to the hospital. She is born to strong and loving parents. One day she will find herself in a place of hurt and she will need to rely on the strength of the love that she has known. Her parents won’t be right beside her. Her friends might be far away. Our Father, his love will never leave her. In that moment it will be his love that will carry her through.
Welcome to the world, precious baby girl! It is so good to meet you.
