dear precious one

“Excuse me! I’m not in your arms yet!” I heard the censure behind me as I was bent over the sticks and matches trying to get the campfire started. A couple of summers before, this same girl curled up in my arms around the campfire and fell asleep. It had become a tradition and she was none too pleased with length of time it was taking me on that particular evening. Soon the fire was filling the darkness of the night sky and we settled on the bench with her in my arms – a chosen vulnerability for a pre-teen girl who might or might not let someone near her, especially with others watching.

Dear precious one, you are safe here. You are still strong here. You are still capable here.

Dear precious one, you are safe here. You can give in to rest. You can give in to sleep.

I wasn’t expecting an experience like that this summer, especially in Canada at a camp where I knew so few people. Three nights after arriving one of the girls came and sat beside me in the evening session. It wasn’t long before she put her head on my shoulder and fell fast asleep in my arms.

Dear precious one, you are safe here. You can give in to comfort. You can give in to peace.

Dear precious one, you are safe here. You are still strong here. You are still capable here.

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. ~ Psalm 4:8
